Elijah and the Fire
Elías y el Fuego
Elijah was a prophet of God during a time when many people in Israel worshiped false gods. King Ahab and Queen Jezebel led the people to worship an idol named Baal. Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal to a contest on Mount Carmel. He said, 'Let's see whose god is real. We will each prepare a sacrifice. The god who answers with fire is the true God.' The prophets of Baal went first. They built an altar, placed a bull on it, and prayed to Baal all day. They shouted and danced, but nothing happened. There was no answer and no fire. Then it was Elijah's turn. He rebuilt God's altar and placed a bull on it. Then Elijah did something surprising. He poured water all over the sacrifice three times until it was completely soaked. Elijah prayed, 'Lord, let these people know that You are God!' Immediately, fire fell from heaven! It burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones, and even the water. All the people fell on their faces and said, 'The Lord, He is God!' This showed God's power over all false gods.
