The Golden Calf

El Becerro de Oro

Moses went up Mount Sinai to meet with God and receive the Ten Commandments. The people waited at the bottom of the mountain. Moses was gone a long time - forty days and forty nights. The people became impatient and worried. They went to Aaron and said, 'Moses has been gone too long. Make us gods to lead us!' Aaron gave in and said, 'Bring me your gold earrings.' The people brought their gold jewelry. Aaron melted the gold and made it into a statue of a calf. The people said, 'These are the gods who brought us out of Egypt!' They built an altar and worshiped the golden calf. Up on the mountain, God told Moses what was happening. Moses hurried down the mountain carrying the two stone tablets. When Moses saw the people dancing and worshiping the golden calf, he was furious! He threw down the stone tablets and they broke into pieces. Moses destroyed the golden calf and punished those who had sinned. Moses went back up the mountain to ask God to forgive the people. God was merciful and gave Moses new stone tablets. This sad story teaches us not to worship idols and to wait patiently for God.
